Coughing is uncommon in the infant less than 6 months old. This reflex is ordinarily not seen at this age, even in those with large amounts of mucus in the airway. When a young infant does have a persistent cough, pertussis, Chlamydia pneumonia, allergy or cystic fibrosis should be considered.
Sneezing is more common in this age group and is much less significant. Because of the importance of nose breathing in young infants, sneezing can occur quite often, usually in the absence of any respiratory disease.
