Labored respirations consist of a triad of physical signs:
Each of these has specific limitations that the physician must be aware of, especially in the infant less than 6 months old. Taken as a group, however, these signs are the most valuable signs of respiratory distress. They are fairly specific for the respiratory tract, they appear early in the course of the disease and worsen as the disease progresses, thus serving as prognostic as well as diagnostic signs.
