Data shows that about 5% of high school sports injuries are concussions, most with high contact sports. Younger athletes recover more slowly.

  • most college athletes with simple concussions are back to normal within 5 days and all by 10 days
  • however 17% of high school athletes will be out for 8-21 days after a simple concussion and 5% will be out for > 21 days

Post-concussion symptoms almost all resolve by 2-3 months, but neurocognitive deficits will take longer. While a single concussion can cause permanent brain injury, this is more common after repeated mild ones. "Second impact syndrome" refers to a concussion received before symptoms associated with the first have completely cleared. Death and chronic TBI have been reported. Permanent disqualification from collision sports must be considered for the athlete with multiple concussions if:

  • each concussion results in more severe or longer lasting symptoms
  • it takes a less severe injury to cause a concussion
  • the athlete's style of play makes concussions more likely
  • the athlete has a learning disability
