The Safe Sleep Project at St. John has focused initially on the Birthing Center. The components of this project include:

  • A safety contract to be signed by the mother before rooming in with her baby. The Birthing Center has been asking patients to sign a safety contract for some time; it has been revised as part of this project to include safe sleep items.
  • Education on safe sleep prior to discharge from the Birthing Center. An informational binder has been developed for this purpose with the assistance of Tomorrow's Child. This binder contains:
    • "What constitutes an unsafe sleep environment"
    • Re-enactment pictures illustrating an unsafe sleep environment
    • "What is an infant safe sleep environment"
    • Re-enactment pictures from the Wayne County Coroner's Office of actual death scene investigations
    • In addition to the above elements which are used both for education of parents and training of staff, there is the Nursing Policy on Safe Sleep for staff training.
  • Postpartum questionnaire to be used in the outpatient OB and Pediatric clinics. Tomorrow's Child will assist in tabulating the data from these questionnaires.
