In 2007, MDCH and Tomorrow's Child began working with Riverview Hospital to initiate an Infant Safe Sleep Hospital Project. Since then, this effort has been expanded to St. John and Providence, with plans to introduce it into Macomb and River District in the near future. An initial survey of parents in the outpatient department revealed:

  • Many parents have heard about back sleep and safe sleep but don't believe it.
  • Most families either have a crib or have access to one but don't use it.
  • Some parents observed their baby on the side in the hospital and placed their baby on the side at home.
  • Some hospital nurses verbally discounted the safe sleep message.

The challenges to implementing such a project in the hospital are:
  • nurse and physician disbelief
  • patient and family resistance
  • influence of grandparents
  • perceived interference with breastfeeding
