Knowing that many infant deaths which would previously have been classified as SIDS were now being related to unsafe sleeping conditions, the Work Group focused on unsafe sleep practices and the entire infant sleep environment.

Three key audiences were identified: child care providers, health care professionals and the general public. The core educational message for all 3 audiences was that "Every baby should be placed in a safe sleep environment." The elements of MDCH's safe sleep environment were patterned after the AAP guidelines. Specific recommendations were made concerning child care providers. The campaign for health care professionals was to include:

  • data to demonstrate the issue and convince providers to adopt safe sleep guidelines
  • information to understand that these infant deaths are associated with unsafe sleep and are not necessarily "SIDS"
  • the expectation of implementing Infant Safe Sleep as a standard of practice in Michigan hospitals
