As previously discussed, late-onset neonatal sepsis tends to be insidious in onset, is more focal in nature, with an increased incidence of meningitis but a lower mortality. These are babies that were discharged from the hospital at 2-3 days of age and have been well at home until the appearance of signs of sepsis later in the first month. In addition to bacteria, certain seasonal viral illnesses (RSV, enteroviruses) should be kept in mind.
