On the other hand, neglect of user preferences
means a web site that no one but you and your mother
will visit. And she'll only go once. Remember, the web is not a mass medium, like television, where the only choice the viewer makes is whether or not to watch at a particular time. The web is very much one-to-one, one surfer to one web page.
For example, polls consistently show that surfers won't wait longer than 15 seconds for a page or graphic to load, that they will leave a site if background music starts to play and that they HATE scrolling. If you have a web page with these features, chances are excellent the visitor will leave (and not come back). And they'll leave because they can! They, not you, are in charge of their surfing experience.
