HEADDSSS Interview

Safety

|

There are several questions on the HEADDSSS interview about safety. First, you have to ask about seatbelts. Remember, accidents, especially motor vehicle accidents, are the number one cause of death in this country in 15-24 year olds. So you need to ask if they are regularly restraining themselves.

Access to weapons is another safety related question. I will often ask adolescents whether there is a gun in the house. If the answer is yes, I ask whether it is locked up and if they know where the ammunition is.

Substance use or abuse can be ascertained through the CRAFFT questions or by simply asking about experience with drugs or alcohol. Remember the disparity between what kids want to talk about and what is actually discussed during an office visit. These kids are willing to discuss their alcohol or drug use, but you have to ask first!
